Woohoo!!! Well I searched all the nooks and crannies of the Internet to make this work and just got it. The plan - be able to boot my Apple iMac (Intel based one) using Novell’s ZENworks for Desktops 7 SP1.
The iMac is a great desktop and will run whatever OS you want without issue, the only major difference is it has an EFI boot PROM instead of a normal PC BIOS. This is not the issue stopping me... Have a look at rEFIt
The issue is I could not find the driver for the Marvell Yukon 88E8053 network card that is in the iMac so ZENworks (ZfD) would not be able to connect to the network and image the machine.
I finally found the driver at Novell forge under ZDM 6.5
And I found some good instructions at Novell Support TID 3421576 and TID 3931695
And it all works I can now image my iMac with Windows, Linux, Mac OS X etc... Very nice
1)Download the Novell ZfD imaging CD (bootcd.iso) that is in the Novell download site (zdm7sp1ir1hp1 is latest at time of writing and was used for this)
2)Download the driver from Novell forge and add it to the ISO in the addfiles folder (I use MagicISO but what ever ISO editor you prefer)
3)Burn the CD and boot the Mac from it
4)Select Manual mode
5)Enter the TFTP server address
6)At the prompt type “hwinfo --netcard”
7)Type “modprobe sk98lin”
8)Type “ifconfig eth0 up”
9)Type “/sbin/dhcpcd” (this bit may take a minute)
10)Now if you type “ifconfig” you should have a network card and give it a few second an IP address (assuming you have a DHCP server)
11)Just image the machine as normal using “img”
UPDATE: The process above only works with the Marvell Yukon 88E8053. Newer iMac’s are shipping with the Marvell Yukon 88E8058 which are not supported by this driver... I’m currently working on a driver that will do both cards
